Wells kirjoitti vähän aikaa sitten kiinnostavan merkinnän Night Shade Booksin blogiin. Pari lainausta:

My new book is The Cloud Roads, and it will be released by Night Shade in March of this year. It’s been five years since my last published fantasy novel, three years since my last published book. I feel like I’ve been away a lot longer than that.

In 2006, even though I had two novels coming out (the paperback edition of The Gate of Gods, and my first Stargate: Atlantis novel Reliquary), three short stories, a non-fiction article, and a reprint I did myself of my first novel which had gone out of print, I was told that my career was pretty much over except for the death throes.

I gave up writing a prequel to the Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy because my then-agent didn’t think there was any hope of it selling. (Parts of it have since been published in the wonderful Black Gate Magazine). I published another Stargate: Atlantis novel in 2007 — both media tie-ins were labors of love, and gave me a creative break from fantasy, but didn’t get as wide an audience as they could have due to distribution problems. And that year I started writing about five other novels that all died on the vine. Then one of the dead novels was resurrected as The Cloud Roads.

I finished writing The Cloud Roads early in 2008 and it went out for submission that summer. And nobody wanted it. Time crawled on, and I wrote a sequel, The Serpent Sea, because I loved the world and the characters too much to give up on them. I also wrote a YA fantasy, set in a sort of steampunkish created world, with a non-white female protagonist who does not fall in love with a vampire or a werewolf. (Yeah, it hasn’t sold yet.) And I thought about what I was going to do with my life if this was it.

Tuo on tosiaan mielenkiintoinen merkintä. Minusta on hyvä, että Martha Wells löysi uuden kustantajan, koska hän on alan parhaimpia viihdekirjailijoita. Hänen kirjat ovat kiehtovia, eikä niissä sorruta tyypillisiin kliseisiin.

Amazonin mukaan The Cloud Roads julkaistaan tällä hetkellä vasta huhtikuussa (12.4.) eli julkaiseminen näyttää viivästyvän noin kuukaudella.

Luin The Cloud Roadsin ennakkoarvostelupainoksen, joten englanninkieliseltä puolelta löytyy pitkä arvostelu siitä.

Pidin todella paljon tästä kirjasta, koska se oli erilainen kuin muut fantasiakirjat, eikä siinä ollut tyypillisiä kliseitä. Saatoin ehkä kehua tätä kirjaa hieman liian paljon, mutta olen aina pitänyt tällaisesta kekseliäästä viihdefantasiasta. (Lisäksi olen parantumaton Wells-fani.)

The Cloud Roads kertoi Moonista, joka oli muodonmuuttaja. Moon yritti elää heimojen keskuudessa, mutta koska hän oli erilainen, häntä vierastettiin ja hänet karkotettiin heimojen keskuudesta. Kun hän tapasi toisen muodonmuuttajan (Stone), hänen elämänsä muuttui. Stone vei hänet Indigo Cloud Courtiin, jossa asui muita muodonmuuttajia. Pian Moonille selvisi miksi hänet oli viety sinne... Tarina eteni nopeasti eteenpäin, eikä kirjassa ollut tylsiä hetkiä.

Martha Wells oli onnistunut luomaan täysin erilaisen fantasiamaailman, joka erottui muiden kirjailijoiden luomista maailmoista. Three Worlds oli täynnä erilaisia rotuja ja ihmeellisiä asioita. Pidin erityisesti siitä, että päähenkilö ei ollut ihminen, vaan muodonmuuttaja (eli Raksura).

Minun täytyy todeta, että maltan tuskin odottaa, että pääsen lukemaan ensi vuonna julkaistavan jatko-osan (The Serpent Sea).

Minusta The Cloud Roads on täydellistä viihdefantasiaa, joten annoin kirjalle viisi tähteä.

Martha Wells' first two novels, The Element of Fire and City of Bones, were praised for their rich detail and original concepts. The Death of the Necromancer raises those two points to new levels and adds characterization that is every bit as rich and passionate as the details of the fantasy world. It's a stunning achievement that is utterly captivating, effortlessly drawing the reader into the story.

The Death of the Necromancer is a great tale but its real strengths are the stunningly convincing detail and the wealth of characters. Aside from Valiarde and Ronsarde, Wells introduces the reader to characters who range from the greatest sorcerer in Ile-Rien (assuming he can be awakened from his opium-induced dreams long enough to be coherent) to Doctor Octave, a self-proclaimed mystic who seems to be just a really good con-artist... or is he...? Wells keeps the reader uncertain about who is who and which is what.

The Death of the Necromancer is a fabulous read and earns my vote for "Most Exciting New Book of the Summer!"

Arvostelu 2:

It's relatively easy to convey the plot of Necromancer, but far more difficult to describe the extraordinary texture of its setting. The city of Vienne has an Italian Renaissance flavour, plus nineteenth century technology, hints of Victorian England, and even whiffs of A Tale of Two Cities and The Tempest. From this seemingly improbable mix of historical and fantasy elements, Martha Wells creates a stunningly vivid society, from the gauche suburban mansions of the nouveau riche, to the drafty, severe elegance of the palace, to the festering alleys of Riverside. And throughout, magic is seamlessly interwoven in the technology, history and culture.

Still, Necromancer's most impressive feature may be its complex, twisting plot and swift pacing, which kept me glued to the pages. In fact, my only criticism of this book is that the conclusion doesn't have as much emotional punch as it could have. Wells still needs to learn how to write a last chapter that leaves her readers laughing, crying, and begging for more.

Still, this is a terrific novel. Wells is in a league with top writers like Lois McMaster Bujold and Barbara Hambly; I'll be waiting impatiently for her next book.

Death of the Necromancer oli käsittämättömän loistokas kirja, ja olin itse asiassa vähän harmissani, kun myöhemmät Wellsin kirjat eivät vielä parantaneet tästä. Mutta sanoisin kyllä, että jokaisen pitäisi lukea tämä kirja :)

Minusta Wells kirjoittaa hyvää viihdefantasiaa ja onnistuu välttämään kliseitä. Lisäksi hän osaa kuvailla tapahtumat kiehtovasti, eikä sorru selittelyyn, joten hän kirjoittaa laadukasta fantasiaa.

Valitettavasti The Death of the Necromancerista ei ole tullut uutta painosta, mutta sen voi ostaa käytettynä esim. Amazonista ja Freyjan aikaisemmin mainitsemasta AbeBooksista (uuden veroiset kirjat saattavat olla Amazonissa kalliita, mutta hyväkuntoisia käytettyjä kirjoja voi ostaa muutamalla eurolla; AbeBooks on todennäköisesti halvempi ostopaikka kuin Amazon).

Kuten jo aikaisemmin mainitsin, pidin todella paljon Wellsin uudesta kirjasta (The Cloud Roads). Minusta oli hienoa, että Wells oli uskaltanut kirjoittaa kirjan muodonmuuttajista eli Raksuroista, jotka eivät olleet ihmisiä, eivätkä haltioita. Kirjassa oli sopivassa suhteessa draamaa, toimintaa ja huumoria.

The Cloud Roadsia voisi kutsua klassiseksi fantasiaksi, mutta se eroaa todella paljon muista vastaavista teoksista, koska siinä käsitellään mm. Raksuroiden lisääntymistä (Wells oli ottanut vaikutteita hyönteismaailmasta, koska kaikki Raksurat eivät olleet lisääntymiskykyisiä).

The Cloud Roads by Martha Wells is a novel that immediately grabbed my attention because of the cover artwork, but the real reward is the book itself with its rich and inventive world-building, seasoned writing, and entertaining story.

World-building by far is the novel’s most striking attribute. Teeming with exotic wildlife (vargit, draughtbeasts, lopers, cloud-walkers), plants (grenilvine, greenroot, three-leafed purple bow) and intelligent species (Cordans, Sericans, the golden-skinned, white-haired Islanders; Dwei), not to mention sky-islands, wind-ships and a rotating city, the Three Worlds is a fascinating place to explore. Vividly brought to life by Martha Wells’ descriptive prose and vibrant creativity, the highlight of this imaginative fantasy milieu are the Raksura and the Fell.

Yet, for all of its familiarity and predictability, The Cloud Roads is a well-told novel thanks to crisp pacing, exciting action—specifically the battles between the Raksura and the Fell—and deft storytelling.

Minusta on mielenkiintoista, ettei arvostelija ollut kuullut Martha Wellsista aikaisemmin ja luuli The Cloud Roadsin olevan Wellsin debyyttikirja:

I’ll be honest. I had never heard of Martha Wells before and actually thought The Cloud Roads was her debut novel. So it was a little surprising to learn that Martha Wells was actually the author of several novels and short stories, with her first published fiction dating back all the way to 1995. The real surprise though is how I could have overlooked the author in the first place. If The Cloud Roads is any indication, then Martha Wells is a very talented and creative writer, someone I should have been reading all of these years. It’s a mistake I plan on correcting as soon as possible.

It’s always fun to find a fantasy book that isn’t based on medieval Europe. City of Bones, by Martha Wells, is advertised as a story which draws on the Arabian Nights, and it does not have genies and magic lamps, but certainly brave thieves and dangerous deserts. It also contains a little bit of steampunk and a post-apocalyptic element.

The story is full of rich description, as it has to be; unfamiliar settings require more setup than standard ones. Colors are everywhere, from the gold and orange of sunset on the Waste to the rich blues that mark ancient tilework. Details of daily life — paying for water in the lower quarters, the red lanterns meant to repel ghosts — are deftly filled in. The heat of this world, in particular, is ever-present and palpable. The reader becomes almost as accustomed to it as the characters, understanding that “almost cool” is the best they’ll experience during the day, and “like the inside of a bread oven” is more likely.

In short, this is a vivid and fascinating, if sometimes grim, story. The world is engaging and the characters nicely drawn. Khat often edges towards antiheroic and Elen is up to her relatively honest neck in intrigue; if you’re interested in conspiracies and mysteries, this book has them. And if you’re at all tired of sword-wielding heroes on horseback, the setting is a breath of fresh (if not cool) air.

Minusta The Serpent Sea oli täydellinen jatko-osa The Cloud Roadsille. Tarina jatkui melkein suoraan siitä mihin The Cloud Roads päättyi. (Kirjat muodostavat duologian.)

Lyhyesti sanottuna tämä kirja kertoi miten Raksurat matkasivat muinaiselle kotipaikalle (valtava puu), mutta huomasivat pian, että puun siemen oli varastettu (siemen on tärkeä, koska puu mätänee ilman siementä). Raksurat päättivät etsiä siemenen ja siitä alkoi mielenkiintoinen seikkailu.

Olen jo pitkän aikaa ihaillut Martha Wellsin kirjoitustyyliä ja tarinankerrontakykyä, koska hän osaa koukuttaa lukijansa täydellisesti. Kun aloin lukea The Serpent Sea -kirjaa, minun oli vaikea lopettaa sen lukemista.

Annoin kirjalle viisi tähteä, koska se oli mainiota aikuisten fantasiaa.

Englanninkieliseltä puolelta löytyy pidempi arvostelu.

Martha Wellsin uusin kirja eli The Siren Depths julkaistiin jokin aika sitten. Minusta se on Books of the Raksura -sarjan tähän mennessä paras osa, koska maailmanrakentaminen toimii entistä paremmin ja uudet henkilöhahmot ovat kiehtovia. (Tätä kirjaa on vaikea olla ylistämättä.)

Raksura-kirjat ovat olleet hienoa luettavaa, koska ne ovat olleet täysin erilaisia kuin Wellsin aikaisemmat teokset, mutta The Siren Depths on paljon parempi ja eheämpi kokonaisuus kuin The Cloud Roads ja The Serpent Sea. Wells keskittyy tässä kirjassa entistä enemmän maailman ja henkilöhahmojen syventämiseen ja se näkyy selvästi sekä tarinassa että kirjoitustyylissä.

Tässä kolmannessa osassa muodonmuuttajista ja heidän vihollisista paljastetaan mielenkiintoisia asioita, joten sarjan fanit eivät tule pettymään tapahtumiin. Lukijoille selviää mm. millaiset suunnitelmat Raksuroiden vihollisilla on, mitä Moonille tapahtui lapsena ja millaisia asioita Moonin syntymähovissa yritetään salailla.

Annan tälle kirjalle täydet viisi tähteä, koska se on hämmästyttävän hienosti kirjoitettua aikuisten fantasiaa, jossa on syvyyttä ja tyyliä. Pidän erityisesti siitä, että Wells on uskaltanut luoda täysin erilaisen fantasiamaailman, joka eroaa perinteisistä fantasiamaailmoista.

Englanninkieliseltä puolelta löytyy pidempi arvostelu.

Huomasin, että Martha Wells kirjoitti Goodreads-blogissaan The Cloud Roads -kirjan saatavuudesta. Tällä hetkellä näyttää siltä, että The Cloud Roadsia saa ostettua vain e-kirjana, koska painettu versio on ilmeisesti myyty loppuun (sitä saa tällä hetkellä vain muutamista paikoista).

Kirjailija mainitsi samassa yhteydessä, että hän on yrittänyt olla optimistinen Raksura-sarjan jatkumisen suhteen, mutta ei ole enää kovin optimistinen sen suhteen. Toivottavasti sarja ei pääty kolmannen kirjan jälkeen, koska minusta Raksura-kirjat ovat olleet erinomaisia ja laadukkaita fantasiakirjoja.
