Carol Berg on Suomessa melko vähän tunnettu, mutta hyvä fantasiakirjailija, joten päätin aloittaa keskustelun hänen kirjoista.

Bergilta on tulossa uusi kirjasarja (The Sabrian Veil), mutta se on vielä työn alla, eikä ensimmäisen osan (Unholy Alliance) ilmestymispäivästä ole vielä toistaiseksi julkaistu mitään tietoja.

Minusta Berg kirjoittaa hyvää, viihdyttävää ja laadukasta aikuisten fantasiaa. Hänen tuotantoaan voi verrata esim. Lynn Flewellingin ja Robin Hobbin kirjoihin. Pidin todella paljon The Rai-Kirahista ja The Bridge of D'Arnathista. En myöskään voi haukkua The Lighthouse Duet -sarjaa, koska sekin oli hyvää ja laadukasta viihdettä. Song of the Beast oli mielenkiintoinen standalone-kirja.

Minusta kirjojen henkilöhahmot ovat mielenkiintoisia ja niissä on sopivasti syvyyttä. Myös maailmanluominen on onnistunut hyvin.

Onko kukaan muu tutustunut Carol Bergin kirjoihin?

Carol Berg on todellakin tuntematon kirjailija ainakin minulle, mutta mielenkiintoni heräsi tämän aiheen ja kirjailijatietokantaan sekä kirjailijan henkilökohtaisiin sivuihin tutustuessani. Mitä todennäköisimmin otan hänen tuotantonsa jossain vaiheessa lukulistalle.

Berg taitaa olla yksi niistä esimerkeistä, kuinka jokin kirjailija jää vaille laajempaa huomiota Suomessa, kun kukaan ei ota hänen kirjojaan suomentaakseen. Tosin en tiedä kuinka vahva lukijakunta hänellä on muualla maailmassa.

Lukeminen kannattaa varmaankin aloittaa tuosta The Rai-Kirah -trilogiasta pikemmin kuin yksittäisestä Song of the Beastista?

Carol Berg on valitettavasti aika tuntematon kirjailija Suomessa, koska hänen kirjoja ei ole käännetty suomeksi. Jos kirjoja käännettäisiin suomeksi, monet lukijat saattaisivat pitää niistä.

Lukeminen kannattaa aloittaa The Rai-Kirah -kirjoista. Song of the Beast on standalone-kirja, joten sen voi lukea myöhemmin. Pidin itse kaikista eniten The Rai-Kirah - ja The Bridge of D'Arnath -kirjoista, mutta muutkin kirjat kannattaa lukea.

Luin vasta The Rai-Kirah -sarjan ensimmäisen kirjan Transformationin ja täytyy sanoa, että Berg sai vangittua minut tekstinsä ääreen. Ihan perusfantasiaahan se oli, ja yllätysmomentteja olisi voinut juonessa olla enemmänkin, mutta tapa millä Berg kuvasi kahta päähahmoaan, herätti sympatiaa. Seyonne ja Aleksander olivat oikeastaan aika suoraviivaisen helposti pidettäviä hahmoja, mikä ei tietenkään kutkuta, jos kaipaa tummanpuhuvia ja ristiriitaisia päähenkilöitä. Heidän rooleihinsa oli helppo samaistua. Kunhan tässä aika antaa periksi, niin jatko-osatkin päätyvät kyllä luetuksi. Ja mielenkiinnolla tietenkin odotan, millä tavalla hahmot kehittyvät tarinan edetessä (jos millaan lailla). Transformation oli joka tapauksessa viihdyttävää luettavaa.

Kunhan tässä aika antaa periksi, niin jatko-osatkin päätyvät kyllä luetuksi.

Suosittelen jatko-osien lukemista. Koska en halua kirjoittaa mitään juonipaljastuksia, niin totean lyhyesti, että jos ensimmäinen osa tuntui hyvältä, niin pidät varmasti myös muista osista. Jatko-osat olivat minusta yhtä viihdyttäviä kuin ensimmäinen osa.

Fantasy Book Critic -sivustolta löytyy arvostelu The Spirit Lens -kirjasta:

Partly a mystery, partly an exploration of a somewhat familiar but also quite different society on the verge of an age of reason, partly the beginning of an epic as far as the big picture goes, The Spirit Lens is packed with events and it has many twists and turns, of which some are quite unpredictable and made me appreciate it quite a lot at the end.

After I got into the style of the novel and its happenings started hooking me, its main attraction were the twists and turns and the characters about whom slowly we start having quite different impressions than at the start. Revelations from the past coupled to traits that come at fore only after a while mean that what we believe at the beginning will be quite changed by the end. This unpredictability raised Spirit Lens most in my estimation since in so many genre books the characters are marked: "the destined one, the sidekick, the love interest, the villain, the noble but doomed one", while here there is much more subtlety and even at the end when we seemingly know a lot more, there is a lot of uncertainty at least with regard to the big picture.

And of course there is a lot of action, daring escapes, plots and counter plots so The Spirit Lens does not lag at all once it gets going, while its main thread is wrapped up so there is completion before the next installment. Highly recommended and a solid A, I will give it a re-read at some point later and may even raise my estimation of it now that I am comfortable with its style.

SBR: Some say that this new series is a departure from your previous work. Do you feel that this is so? Why?

CB: I think it is, to a certain extent, because of my choice to write an investigative mystery. We don't travel as far. Instead of battles or journeys of discovery, much of the adventure comes from sorting through small events and clues to create a much larger picture. Though I love pleasing my readers, I also don't want to tell the same story over and over again. I want to create complex characters, many layered stories, and interesting worlds - stories that take a little time to read and might be worth a reread if one is so inclined. That's not going to change. But I like to think that each of my series brings a different slant to the fantasy genre - the intense individual relationships of the rai-kirah books, the powerful bonds of love and family in the D'Arnath books, and Valen's solo journey into myth in the Lighthouse books. I hope readers will travel this mystery road with me as well.

SBR: What can we expect from the next installment of the Collegia Magica novels?

CB: The Soul Mirror takes up the story four years after the ending of The Spirit Lens. The missing perpetrator has not been found. Strange things have been happening around Castelle Escalon which lead Portier and the king to believe that everything is not over with. And our renegade sorcerer has become more erratic and much more dangerous. But it is the abrupt murder of one of the witnesses from the trial that sets a new train of events in motion. As I mentioned earlier, our friend Portier does not tell this portion of the story. The narrator is Anne de Vernase, who was herself a most important witness in the culminating trial in The Spirit Lens. Anne is reserved and intelligent and very, very disciplined, though she would never think of herself that way. She is a skeptic when it comes to magic and despises its practitioners (except for her sister). Which means, of course, that she is thrown into a situation where everything she believes is turned upside down, and she is forced to confront some Very Bad Things, including our scary renegade mage, with only her wits. And that's before she starts hearing voices and seeing... mmm... apparitions.
