There you have it. That is what I've been up to. This is why Requiem is running behind schedule (though I assure you it WILL get finished and folks who've read the book so far tell me it will be worth the wait.)

Tor-kustantamo julkisti pdf-muotoisen loppuvuoden esitteensä, eikä Scholesin Requiemia ole mukana. Sarjan neljäs osa ilmestyy näin ollen aikaisintaan 2012.

Sääli, että Requiemin julkaiseminen näyttää siirtyvän ensi vuoden puolelle. (Tällä hetkellä näyttää siltä, että melkein kaikki mielenkiintoiset kirjat ilmestyvät odotettua myöhemmin.)

Sivukirjasto-blogi arvosteli Psalms of Isaakin kaksi ensimmäistä osaa. Lamentation saa arvosanaksi 4/5 ja Canticle 3/5. Lainaus:

Pidin enemmän aloitusosasta, joka jollain tavalla toimi itsekseenkin - jos nyt se kuitenkin kärsi samoista ongelmista kuin kakkososa, joista yhtenä mainittakoon ääristereotyyppiset ja paperinohuet naisihmiset huokaus. Aloitusosa oli kuitenkin juonellisesti sen verran paljon ehjempi kokonaisuus, että pitkiin sarjoihin kyllästyneet voisivat olla tyytyväisiä luultavasti ihan vain Lamentationin lukemalla.

Antiphon on saatavilla pokkarina, mm. AdLibris toimittaa.

Scholesin kustantajan ensi kevään katalogista, joka kattaa julkaisuohjelman toukokuun alkupuolelle saakka, ei löydy Requiemia. Ehkä kirja ilmestyy ensi vuoden kesällä tai syksyllä.

Scholes antoi noin kuukausi sitten päivityksen Requiemin tilanteesta:

Howdy folks. Thought I'd pop back in and let you know that I'm finally back to work on Requiem. The work stoppages have been tough but the health issues have been resolved and I seem to be back and better than ever.  I'm 43,000 words in Requiem -- working on Chapter 9 now -- and anticipate having the book wrapped by Thanksgiving. Ideally, it'll be revised and over to Tor by January. Then, I'll take a little break and jump into Hymn, the last volume.

I'm grateful for all of the fans and readers who've kept cheerleading me from the sidelines through some of the tougher months in my life. All the notes by email and on Facebook are great encouragements. I'd hoped to have Requiem coming out around now back before the wheels came off. Thanks for being so patient. The good news is that I think I'll have the entire series wrapped by the end of 2012 -- just six years after starting it and just three years after the first book came out. Not too shabby.

EDIT: Grasping for the Wind -blogi julkisti viime viikolla uuden haastattelun. Requiemin kirjoittaminen on edennyt aiemman tiedotteen jälkeen:

But I’m 65k into Requiem. Most of these come in around 145k. It’ll go fast once I’m fully operational…2k per day…we’re talking a few months.

Scholes vastaa kysymykseen tulevaisuudensuunnitelmistaan:

What projects are you working on for the future that we can look forward to?

KS: I think I’m going to take a break after this one and write some stand alone pieces that might start new series. I also have some series in mind in the Psalms of Isaak universe as well as some more traditional fantasy…and mainstream, too. I have a lot of ideas.

So I’m solidly back to work again on the Psalms of Isaak after a long stretch away. I finished volume three, Antiphon (now available in mass market paperback for your reading pleasure) back in August 2009, just shortly after my daughters were born. I revised and copyedited large portions of that novel with either Lizzy or Rae sleeping in one arm as I read and hunted and pecked keys one-handed.

After that, there was a lot of silence. My Health Stuff combined with the financial impact of having twins and not writing had me cutting back on most appearances and I experienced one of the toughest writer’s blocks I’ve ever faced.

Scholes kertoi 17. joulukuuta Requiemin kirjoittamisesta:

In looking at my productivity over the last little while, I finally got back to work on Requiem and laid down around 50k words over the course of two months. I was building steam for the finish when a couple of back-to-back losses hit our family.

Building that shed has me hankering to play with the tools again and just in the last week, two major pieces of Requiem’s third act have snapped clearly into place in my mind’s eye. The house is taking shape and the carpenter is starting to understand how he goes about his work just a little bit better than he did before.

Antiphonin pokkari ei muuten sisällä minkäänlaista karttaa. Luulisi, että romaanin kovakantisessa laitoksessa sellainen on ollut.

Kiitos tiedosta. Scholes bloggasi pari viikkoa sitten tämän vuoden tavoitteistaan. Lainauksia:

-Finish Requiem (it needs 65k words — approx 7 weeks of drafting time, plus revision.
-Research, outline and draft Hymn (approx 150k words — approx 2 months to research and outline, approx 5 months drafting time plus revision.

It’s been two and half years since I delivered a book. It’s been fifteen months since I’ve had one come out.

So my biggest goals for 2012 are to finish Requiem which is just painfully close to done. And then jump right into Hymn.

Requiemin valmistuminen on lähellä, Scholes sanoi kirjasta eilen:

I’m right at the tail end of it now and it’s been over two years in the writing.

Kuukauden alussa kirjailija kertoi tulevaisuudensuunnitelmistaan:

I’m nearly finished with my series, which means within the next year I’ll be figuring out a next project and, whenever the time is right, ideally landing a contract for it. I know whatever I do will be a slightly smaller project than five books, but I do like writing in multi-book series. And because the Psalms of Isaak is enjoying some relative success (not huge numbers but the fans who love it are verbal about it and it’s gotten a lot of critical acclaim) I hope to tap that success by including at least one P of I related book in whatever my next pitch is.

Kirjojen myynnistä kustantajalle tulevat rahat ylittivät Scholesin saaman ennakkomaksun muutama kuukausi Antiphonin julkaisun jälkeen. Kirjailijalle on siitä lähtien maksettu rojalteja. Vaikka Psalms of Isaakista ei tullut bestseller-sarjaa, tuottaa se silti voittoa Tor-kustantamolle.

Requiem was delivered last Saturday at 12:30 in the afternoon. I finished it in the bar of the Village Inn in Saint Helens, where I took up a corner for about five hours and two meals. She weighed in at 143k words, putting her in the ballpark of Canticle and Antiphon. It’s the hardest book I’ve written because of the circumstances it was written under.

Most have know the tale of this book’s slow and painful birth — interrupted by death and birth and horrific health issues over the course of about two years (keep in mind that it takes me about 3 months to actually write a novel).
