Kirja on vaihtoehtohistoria, joka lähtee eri uomiin todellisesta liitukaudelta lähtien. Mm. dinosauruksia ei kohdannut sukupuutto. Sukupuuttoon kuolleista eläimistä mastodontti on erityisesti tarinassa esillä.
Kirjan maailmassa on kaksi hallitsevaa älyllistä lajia. Lämminveriset nisäkkäät, ihmiset eli tanut sekä vaihtolämpöiset, muinaisista matelijoista kehittyneet jilanet. Tanujen elämänmeno on alkeellista metsästäjä-keräilijä tyyppistä. Jilanien keskuudessa on puolestaan teknologista osaamista, he ovat ajan saatossa muokanneet geenimanipulaation avulla useita eläimiä hyötykäyttöönsä. Heidän ajatusmaailmansa ja käyttäytymismallit poikkeavat huomattavasti ihmisistä. Molemmat lajit ovat varsin sotaisia ja etenkin jilanet raakalaismaisia. Kirja käsitteleekin paljon lajien vihanpitoa ja keskinäistä sotimista.
Tarinalla on toki hyvät puolensa, mutta lopulta se ei ollut minua varten. Tarinassa olisi saanut olla vähemmän sotimista, tappamista ja yksiulotteista vihanpitoa, jolloin tilaa olisi ollut enemmän muulle. Tällaisenaan tarina oli ihan liian pitkä (492s.). Eedenistä länteen on ensimmäinen osa trilogiaa ja sen voi lukea itsenäisenä teoksena. En ole erityisen kiinnostunut jatko-osista. 3-/5

Novellikokoelma, jossa kirjoittajina vuoronperään on Jaana Ala-Huissi ja Mervi Heikkilä. Mielestäni parhaat tarinat olivat Heikkilän kirjoittamat Chatte ja Agnes. Novellikokoelma, jossa kirjoittajina vuoronperään on Jaana Ala-Huissi ja Mervi Heikkilä. Mielestäni parhaat tarinat olivat Heikkilän kirjoittamat Chatte ja Agnes. Niissä oli varsin hyvät ideat ja kerrontakin vetävää, mutta jotain toteutuksessa silti uupuu. Muut tarinat olivat hyvistä ideoistaan huolimatta kokonaisuudessaan keskivertoja. Niitä luki sujuvasti, mutta mitään wau elämystä en niistä saanut. 3-/5
