Elokuva julkaistu 2017: Roger Lancelyn Green King Arthur and his knights of the round table. Suht yhtenäiseksi tarinaksi koottu versio Arthurin ja kumppaneitten seikkailuista. Ei silti oikein tällaisenaan vedä: jalot ritarit ratsastelevat sinne tänne etsimässä seikkailuja, jotka ovat niin samankaltaisia, etten pysty muistamaan kuka oli kuka. Ja Graalin malja leijuu taustalla. Kaksi aikajanaa: Diana Gabaldon Muukalainen. Alkuun 1900-luvulla ja sitten päähenkilö tempaistaan 1700-luvulle. Helppolukuinen ja viihdyttäväkin, muttei kyllä 800 sivun edestä. Klassisen kirjallisuuden inspiroima: Ursula Le Guin Lavinia. Vergiliuksen Aeneis-runoelman sivumaininta on nostettu päähenkilöksi. Le Guinin tuttua tyyliä, josta pidän, mutta en osaa määritellä. Runollisen täsmällistä? Rakenne liian omituinen; Lavinia keskustelee paljon myöhemmin eläneen Vergiliuksen haamun kanssa ja koko ajan muistutetaan, ettei hän oikeastaan edes elä, fiktiivinen kun on. Luvattoman paljon painovirheitä.

2017 julkaistu: Petina Gappah Muistojen kirja. Suomennos tänä vuonna julkaistu. Zimbabwelaisen kirjailijan ensimmäinen romaani on kuolemaantuomitun naisen päiväkirja. Ilahduttava uusi tuttavuus. Elävän kepeään tyyliin kerrottuja karmeuksia. Ehkä osan zimbabwelaisen yhteiskunnan ongelmista ja ennakkoluuloista olisi voinut jättää seuraavaankin kirjaan.

Epäluotettava kertoja: Art Spiegelman Maus - Selviytyjän tarina. Omaelämäkerturit yleensä ovat epäluotettavia, ja tässä kertojan vielä tulkitsee poika, joka ei tule isänsä kanssa toimeen. Sarjakuvamuotokin lisää fiktiivisyyden tuntua, vaikka tarina onkin varmasti tosi kaikessa, mikä lukijalle ja sanoman kannalta on merkittävää. Vaikken pidä suttuisesta piirrostyylistä, ovat kuvat kuitenkin vaikuttavia, kuten kertomuskin. En tiedä, kuvastaako se jotain alkutekstistä, mutta suomennoksen possessiivisuffiksittomuus on todella ärsyttävää.

Epistolaarista fiktiota: Mark Haddon Yöllisen koiran merkillinen tapaus. Olen tullut huomaamaan, että Goodreadsin ja muidenkin genrelistaukset eivät ole aivan luotettavia. Tässäkin kirjeitä on kovin vähän, mutta onhan niillä sentään käänteentekevä merkitys juonessa. Lievästi autistisen pojan näkökulmasta kirjoitettu imaiseva jännitystarina.   Myyttiin perustuva: Rick Riordan Percy Jackson - Salamavaras. Kaikki tärkeimmät Kreikan jumalmyytit käydään läpi.   Lempiauktoreihini kuuluva: Hergé Vol 714 pour Sydney. Kaikki albumit ovat hyllyssä, vanhimmat irtolehdiksi kuluneina.

Kääk, nyt oli huono hetki pitää kahden viikon tauko lukemisesta, nimittäin tuon reilun parinkymmenen kirjan lukeminen loppuvuoteen tulee olemaan aikamoinen urakka. Kuuluisasta historian henkilöstä: William Shakespeare Julius Caesar. Cajanderin käännöksenä ja englanniksi. Ensilukemalta hämmentynyt, ettei Caesar ollutkaan päähenkilö, vaan näytelmä keskittyy murhaajiinsa ja Caesar itse negatiivisesti esitetty. Ei ihme, ettei Garak tajunnut, miten suuri sotapäällikkö voi olla niin yksinkertainen. Ennemmin uusintaluvun kuin alkukielen takia avautui paremmin, kun en enää odottanut näytelmää Caesarista; sanoma tiivistynee Antoniuksen puheeseen "They were all honourable men".   Suositus "mitä lukisin seuraavaksi" -listalta: Margaret Atwood Sokea surmaaja.

Suosikkikirjailijani suosittelema: Hjalmar Bergman Johan och Helen.   Ja kaikki haasteet täten päätöksessä 72 kirjalla eli jälleen uusi määrällinen ennätys. Spefiä 31% ja siitä 2/3 fantasiaa. Harvinaisen paljon nuorten fantasiaa, jostain syystä haasteet ohjasivat niihin. Ei suuria löytöjä siinä joukossa. 26% muuta kuin kaunokirjallisuutta (elämäkertoja, luonto-oppaita, keittokirjoja ja politiikkaa). Klassikot jäivät aika vähiin tänä vuonna (8%). 8% sarjakuvia. Omasta hyllystä on reilu kolmannes. Luin 53% suomeksi, 38% englanniksi ja 6% ruotsiksi, yhden kutakin ranskaksi ja bulgariaksi, ja kuuntelin yhden venäjäksi. Alkukielistä 68% englantia, 11% suomea, 7% ruotsia, 3% ranskaa ja yksittäisiä kieliä venäjä, bulgaria, hollanti, saksa, jiddish, afrikaans, japani ja arabia.
