Getting the obligatory question that no one wants to answer out of the way then, how is the book coming along?

Everything with my fourth book, The Thorn of Emberlain, is coming along really well. I’m only being slightly facetious when I’m saying that I should be at home working on it [laughs] rather than here in Sweden and Finland traveling between conventions, but some of these things are unavoidable; as strange as it seems to look at this as a professional commitment, I suppose it really is.

My wife and I will have an uninterrupted 2 month period after we go home, during which I basically hope to get the book turned in, and then we can begin setting a firmer schedule for its publication. For the most part I’m very pleased with it. I’m pretty sure that I can fix the stuff that I’m not pleased about in the next 8 weeks or so.

I’ve read that the seven book series was meant to have the first three as the introduction to the world and characters, with the four later books being the actual starting-point of the story. Is that true?

Yeah, that’s still pretty true. I was originally dead set on starting the story with what will be book 4 in the sequence, The Thorn of Emberlain, and I realized about two chapters into trying to write it that I did not feel that I knew the characters involved well enough. It just did not feel right. So I went back and essentially wrote three prequels to it. That cheapens the other novels, you know, in memory - that’s not entirely what I mean to do to them - but I wondered how my readers could feel involved in a setting and these characters if I myself did not feel sufficiently involved in them.

So yes, there will be a major structural difference in the first half of the sequence and the second half, in that the first half was location change, location change, location change, and the second half will be a lot more anchored in place. We will see some new locations, but we’re always going to be returning to Emberlain and the Kingdom of the Seven Marrows, as returning scene settings.

I don’t have any updates I can give at this time, sorry. I get a lot of these, and I wanted to at least answer one. This is the only answer I can give for now.

I wouldn't take that date seriously at the moment. I don't know what it stems from, but I can assure you, they don't have a book that nobody else does. Treat any offered date as nonsense (they've got to have something in the date field in the bookseller databases, even if that something is a random guess) unless you see it coming from me, Gollancz, and Random House all at once.

October 16th is also the release date for the BOOK OF MAGIC anthology, which contains a lot of great stuff including my latest fantasy novelette, “The Fall and Rise of the House of Malkuril.”

Other fun plans include the reinvigoration of my mailing list and a late September / early October rollout of a major website makeover.

Now why, you may ask yourself, is a writer who’s been in a frustrating shell for a while dealing with a long-term project suddenly busting his ass to spruce up his communications, online presence, neglected responsibilities, etc. in the next month or two? Heh. Interesting question.

I don’t have much experience of writer’s block. Other than the need for an occasional break and some reasonable interludes of fallow brain time, I’ve never had sustained trouble with composition, even when wracked with anxiety and depression. Despite my generally fragile mental state during the pandemic, I have remained more or less steadily productive, writing and editing thousands of words on a weekly basis. Words which I have been completely unable to show anyone, thanks to the crushing goddamn chest-filling pressure-out-to-my fingertips sensations that herald another anxiety attack

The plain fact is, my career as a writer is in danger at the moment, and the danger grows with every month I don’t get this under some measure of control, because while my existing books continue to perform very well there is a difference between being a working writer and a person who used to write, and there is only so much my patient editors and publishers and readers can be asked to wait for without clear answers. There is very little practical value in being a writer who falls over heaving and gasping every time he attempts to show people what he’s made.

Absolutely nothing in these novellas will be essential to readers of The Thorn of Emberlain; no critical plot information will be withheld. However, I hope readers will find these shorter works a pleasant expansion and a deeper exploration of the background story.

Q. What else should we know about these novellas?
A. They're pretty robust. Each one clocks in around 40,000 words. They're also a fun chance (or so I hope) for a bit of a leg-stretch and some halting to smell the roses, as it were. In these novellas you'll find all the convoluted swearing, desperate schemes, and fast-paced bloodshed you expect from the Gentlemen Bastards, but you'll also find heartfelt conversations, slices of life in Locke's world, elements of religion and philosophy, stargazing, strange mysteries and stranger truths. You'll get songs, campfire tales, and ghost stories told beside empty roads and ruins.
 
Again, it is crucial to me, as a cornerstone of this project, that nothing in these books be required to understand any of the events of The Thorn of Emberlain. However, if you're eager to spend just a bit more enriching, mystifying, blood-soaked quality time with Locke and Jean, look no further.
