A book with a theme of food or drink[/color] [spoiler=Paolo Bacigalupi: The Windup Girl]Maksimaalista voittoa tavoittelevat ulkomaiset jättiyritykset luovat ruokatuotantoon geneettisesti muunneltuja kasvien siemeniä, joista saa vain yhden kauden sadon. Näin ollen viljelijät on pakotettu ostamaan uudet siemenet joka kausi. Haittaa ja kuolemia aiheuttavat kasvitaudit ja mutaantuneet tuholaiset. Luonnolliset kasvit ovat hävinneet maisemista, mutta Thaimaassa on vielä säilynyt luonnollisten kasvien siemenkantaa, jota varjellaan tarkoin munkkien toimesta. Suuryhtiöt eivät kaihda keinoja päästäkseen käsiksi siemenpankkiin dollarin kuvat silmissä.   Ruuan manipuloinnin lisäksi kirjassa käsitellään geenihakkerointia muutenkin.
