[b]Adv. 8. A book that's more than 800 pages[/b] - Diana Gabaldon: Muukalainen Tiedän, että tämä on hyvin suosittu sarja ja periaatteessa siinä olikin kaikki elementit kohdallaan. Jostain syystä en kuitenkaan innostunut ja lukeminen eteni hitaasti. Mielestäni kirjassa oli paljon turhanpäiväistä höpötystä, joka ei ollut mielenkiintoista eikä edistänyt mitenkään juonenkuljetusta. Karsimalla 200-300 sivua kirja olisi parantunut huomattavasti. En aio lukea jatko-osia. Sen sijaan [b]Dynin[/b] suosittelemaa Shardlake-sarjaa ja [b]HourglassEyesin[/b] vinkkaamaa Lunar Chroniclesia aion vielä lukea.   Luettu 50/52   Loppu häämöttää, niin sanotusti. Kaikki kolme haastetta on edennyt yllättävän tasatahtia, kustakin puuttuu 1-2 kirjaa. Nyt kun katsoo taaksepäin, haasteet etenivät paljon helpommin kuin olin odottanut. Asiaa tietty auttoi että minulla oli sekä aikaa että hillitön lukudraivi, joka nyt alkaa selvästi hiipua. Myös moni ongelmalliseksi kokemani kohta ratkesi yllättävän helposti. Alkuvuodesta pähkäilin esim Goodreads-haasteen kohtaa [i]46. A time travel novel[/i]: mistä löydän kirjan noin oudosta aiheesta, varsinkin kun olin juuri lukenut kaksi aikamatkustuskirjaa, ei kai niitä paljon enempää voinut olla? Tässä vaiheessa voi todeta lukeneeni tämän vuoden puolella kolme kirjaa, jotka sopisivat tuohon kohtaan (Matkantekijä, 22/11/63, Aikakone). Samoin Popsugarin haastekohta [i]10. A book with a cat on the cover[/i] mietitytti. Niitäkin on kertynyt jo kolme ja neljäs odottaa lukemista.   Haasteiden tekeminen on ollut hauskaa, mutta onhan se hauskaa myös lukea välillä täysin omavalintaisia kirjoja. Ensi vuonna ehkä etenen hitaammin ja luen enenmmän haasteeseen kuulumattomia kirjoja väliin. Nyt tuli ahmittua niin vauhdilla, että syksyllä odottelen luultavasti jo malttamattomana seuraavien haasteiden alkua.

Bestseller genreä, jota en yleensä lukisi: Nicholas Evans The Horse whisperer. Jos katsotaan ensisijaisesti romanssiksi, niin ei ole hylly, jolle vasiten hakeudun ja varsinkaan tätä kirjaa en ole suunnitellut lukevani, koska näin elokuvan ja inhosin sitä. Hyvin rajoitetusta majatalon kirjahyllystä tulin nyt kuitenkin poimineeksi. Olihan se laskelmoidun vetävästi kirjoitettu ja sentään moniulotteisempi kuin elokuvasta muistan, mutta yhtään enempää en tarinasta pitänyt.

Ian Flemingin alkuperäismateriaalista Bond seikkailuksi muokanneen Horowitzin teos on tarpeeksi viihdyttävä pitämään haasteen verran otteessaan. Ajanjaksollisesti Trigger Mortis sijoittuu Kultasormen jälkeiseen aikaan 1957 ja Pussy Galore on vielä mukana kuvioissa, joskin jo hiemaan sivuun työnnettynä, Bondin mielenkiinto on tavan mukaan siirtynyt jo eteenpäin. Suhteellisen helppo oli kuvitella katselevansa leffaa tekstin mukana ja Bondille muodostui nopeasti mielikuvana Conneryn kasvot. Vauhdikas juoni kuljettaa Bondia kilpa-autoilun maailmasta Saksan Nürburgringiltä New Yorkiin raketin laukaisuun, kannoillaan tietenkin vanha tuttu Neuvostoliiton SMERSH... Oli minulla parempiakin ehdokkaita tähän haastekohtaan, mutta Kirjastokissa oli sopivasti käsillä, niin tulin lukeneeksi sen. Keskinkertainen. Ehkä Times?   Jokatapauksessa; Talvilinnake oli siinä mielessä erikoista luettavaa, koska pääosassa on Norja/Norjalaiset Toisen maailmansodan aikana. Norjalaisten sotasaatuvutuksista ei yleensä kauheammin kuule, puolueeton maa esiintyy enimmäkseen vitseissä. Norjalla oli kuitenkin iso osa, jopa ratkaiseva sodan lopputuloksen kannalta, kilpajuoksussa atomipommin rakentamista kohtaan. (Tämä oli meikäläiselle täysin uutta tietoa). Talvilinnake kertoo Norjalaisesta tehtaasta Vemorkissa, ainosta jossa valmistettiin raskasta vettä ja jonka saksalaiset valloittivat oman atomipomminsa kehitystarkoitukseen sekä norjalais-brittiläis yhteistyöstä hankkeen sabotoimiseen.
