Käsillä oleva tehtävä ja sen poliittinen asetelma ei ole kirjassa pääasia, vaan tarinassa keskitytään enemmän henkilökemiaan, lajien kulttuurierojen ja elintapojen ruotimiseen sekä yksittäisiin tapahtumiin ja kriisitilanteisiin. Kerrottavaa ja tapahtumia riittääkin siinä määrin, ettei tylsää hetkeä ehdi tulla. Teemojensa puolesta kirja ei loista omaperäisyydellään - on mm. nykyään muodissa olevaa suvaitsevaisuus teemaa ja ikiaikaiset teemat ystävyydestä ja rakkaudesta. Siispä tähän. Sansomin sarja pohjautuu vahvasti 1500-luvun englannin hallinnan, uskon, uskonpuhdistuksen ja poliittisen juonittelun vaiheisiin. Päähenkilö, lakimies Shardlake on fiktiivinen hahmo, mutta hän työskentelee pääministeri Thomas Cromwellille joka tuolloin oli kuningas Henrik VIII pääministeri. [spoiler]Cromwellin tarina päättyy tarinassa oikean historian mukaisesti roviolla, maanpetoksesta tekaistusti syytettynä.
