Butler: Kindred   Sekä kirjailija että päähenkilö ovat afroamerikkalaisia. Tässä oli ehkä vuoden yllättäjä. Koskaan en ole kuullutkaan Octavia Butlerista ja voi miten loistava kirjailija! Kindrediin törmäsin vasta muutama kuukausi sitten, kuitenkin kirja on kirjoitettu jo 1970-luvulla. Eihän tätä malttanut laskea käsistään! Iästään huolimatta tuore kirja, jonka juoni piti otteessaan ja henkilöhahmot oli kiitettävän moniulotteisia. Nyt täytyy kaivaa muutkin Butlerin kirjat käsiin. 4½/5   32/52

Ja on siinä muutakin veteen liittyvää.   Olipas kerrassaan upea tarina – tarina joka piti otteessaan koko kirjan ajan alusta viimeriveille saakka – ei tapahtunut notkahduksia eikä mitään latistumisia missään vaiheessa. Kirja aiheutti jopa kylmät väreet jossain kohtaa, mikä on hyvän tarinan kerronnan merkki. Tarina soljui vaivattomasti ja lukiessa oli täysin uppoutunut tarinan sisälle. Vaikka surua ja haikeutta oli, tarina ei jättänyt ahdistavaa jälkimakua vaan on omalla tapaa myös lohdullinen. Koko kirja kertoi yhden yön tapahtumista ja mukana oli Murakamille ominaiset elementit: kissat, musiikki ja uni. Ei ollut ihan Murakamin parhaimmistoa, minun mielestäni, silti varsin lukemisenarvoinen.   38/52

[b]8. An "own voices" book[/b] - Angie Thomas: The hate u give   Iso osa kirjan henkilöistä sekä kirjailija itse ovat afroamerikkalaisia. Kirjan henkilöissä "own voice" korostuu myös paikalliskulttuurilla, he asuvat kokomustassa, jengien hallitsemassa getossa, joka on monessakin mielessä hyvin kaukana Suomesta. Vaikka miljöö oli vieras, hyvin kirjoitettu kirja veti mukaansa geton syövereihin. Asiaa auttoi poikkeuksellisen hyvin luettu äänikirja. En tiedä miten kirjan slangi on suomennettu, mutta tietämättäkin suosittelen lämpimästi alkuperäiskieltä, tunnelma on autenttisempi. 4½/5   39/52
